Entering Notes

To enter a note, type text into the text box at the bottom of the page and hit [Enter].

The timestamp for a note is the time you begin typing. Clearing the text box will reset the timestamp.

User

Authenticated users can take private notes by selecting their username in the "User" drop down list.

If the course administrator has enabled public notes, users can check the "public" check box to make their notes stream public and discoverable by other viewers. Public notes streams can be viewed by selecting the user's username under the "Public Notes" section of the "User" drop down list.

Anonymous users can select "Log in..." to login and be returned to the viewer to take private notes. Users without a CourseCast account can select "(anonymous)" and enter a personal channel name to take private notes.

Channel

Channels allow viewers without a CourseCast account to store their notes on the server and view them later. By choosing a unique channel name that is hard to guess (effectively a password), the user can store notes privately.

Channels can also be used to create a collaboration space for notes. By sharing a channel name, authenticated and anonymous users can take notes that will be visible to all channel participants.

Live Notes allows users to take timestamped notes while a recording is in process.  These notes appear in the web-based viewer, and can be used to skip to the point in the video where the note was taken.  Notes can also be searched from within the viewer, which enables notes to act as a means of "tagging" points in the recorder for later review.  For example, a student could type "review" to mark points they want to go over again later.

Taking Live Notes

Live Notes can be accessed from the Student Home Page (click "Students" from the CourseCast home page).  Courses currently being recorded will have a "Lecture (or session) in progress" listed under the course (or folder) heading (see below).

Click "take notes" to open the web-based note-taking interface.

lnotes-1
To begin taking live notes, enter a Channel. This channel can be whatever you want it to be, but remember that it does not have a password and that anyone who knows your Screen Name will be able to see and modify your notes.

As you enter notes, they will appear in the region above the text box, timestamped with the current time.
NOTE: The timestamp for a given note is the point in time when the user begins typing the note.  Entering a note or clearing the text box will reset the timestamp.

Click "delete" to the right (while hovering over a note) to delete the note.

It is not currently possible to edit a note from the Live Notes interface.  See "Viewing" below to learn how to replace a note while viewing the recording online.

Closing Live Notes

When the recording is over, or when you are done taking notes, simply close the Live Notes window. All of your notes are automatically saved on the server as you enter them.
